ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Take a
deeper dive.

Into the science. Into the equipment. Into the decisions that make hyperbaric care safer.

Build your foundation through NHSA training that connects classroom learning with practical chamber experience and a clear focus on safety.

BEYOND THE LECTURE

Understand the why.
Practice the how.

Hyperbaric training is about more than knowing which control to turn. It is understanding pressure and oxygen, preparing a patient and chamber, recognizing a concern, and knowing how your team should respond.

HBOTCertification.com provides National Hyperbaric Safety Association training. The in-person program pairs structured instruction with equipment demonstrations, practical exercises, case discussions, and assessment.

LEARNING THAT YOU CAN PUT TO WORK

Learn the theory.
Practice together.

Work alongside your cohort and connect the classroom material to the people, equipment, and routines of a hyperbaric clinic.

Knowing what to do when things go well matters. Preparing for what to do when they do not is an essential part of the training.

A DEEPER DIVE INTO THE MATERIAL

From first principles
to practical decisions.

The NHSA in-person course outline connects the science of hyperbaric oxygen with clinical understanding, chamber operation, safety, and assessment.

Course workbook, notes, and calculator arranged for hyperbaric training

Start with a shared foundation.

An introduction to course objectives, NHSA, the safety briefing, and relevant anatomy and physiology prepares the cohort for the modules that follow.

The outline below describes the in-person program. Clinic Safety Director is a separate online course focused on safety leadership and operational oversight.

01

The foundations of pressure

  • History of diving and hyperbaric medicine
  • Boyle’s, Henry’s, and Dalton’s gas laws
  • Units, conversions, and partial-pressure calculations
02

Oxygen, physiology & equipment

  • How oxygen moves through the lungs and circulation
  • Chamber systems and oxygen delivery and storage
  • Connecting pressure and oxygen to hyperbaric applications
03

Build safety into the system

  • ASME and NFPA safety concepts
  • Monoplace, multiplace, and portable chamber systems
  • Fire prevention, grounding, and patient preparation
04

Understand the patient response

  • Oxygen’s physiologic effects and potential toxicity
  • Decompression calculations and tables
  • Patient assessment, ear checks, vital signs, and documentation
05

From checklist to chamber

  • Supervised introduction to controls and operating checklists
  • Absolute and relative contraindications
  • Recognizing adverse events, including barotrauma and oxygen toxicity
06

Practice the operating sequence

  • Patient loading, communication, and treatment records
  • Neurologic assessment in the course context
  • Decompression illness and diving-related injuries
07

Apply the concepts to cases

  • Treatment protocols and on-label and off-label applications
  • Scenario discussions about contraindications and decisions
  • Fire-response and evacuation practice
08

Rehearse the unexpected

  • Hands-on emergency drills and team communication
  • Response planning for power failure and patient emergencies
  • Review of hyperbaric calculations
09

Connect safety and judgment

  • Review of oxygen safety and chamber standards
  • Prevention of adverse events
  • Key-concept review and examination preparation
10

Demonstrate what you have learned

  • NHSA board certification examination
  • Practical chamber assessment
  • Capstone activities and skills sign-offs

Course completion includes discussion of continuing education resources and the Clinic Safety Director pathway. Confirm the current schedule, assessment requirements, and any CME option with the training team.

SAFETY IS A PRACTICE

Prepare deliberately.
Respond as a team.

  • Recognize how pressure, oxygen, and equipment change the working environment.
  • Use preparation, screening, observation, and communication as part of daily routines.
  • Connect fire prevention, grounding, and chamber-entry checks to the facility safety program.
  • Rehearse emergency roles and procedures before an unexpected event occurs.
  • Understand why documentation, review, and continuing education matter after the course.

Course education supports safety awareness. Facility compliance also depends on applicable requirements, the adopted code edition, equipment, manufacturer instructions, and oversight.
